Windows 95 - Configuring a web browser

Downloading Internet Explorer

If your version of Windows 95 already has Internet Explorer pre-installed, then skip this section and go down to Configuring Internet Explorer.

Click on Start, Programs, MS-DOS prompt. Type in ftp ftp.netro.com.au. Login as ftp, and type your email address as a password (eg: user@netro.com.au).

Type in the following commands exactly as shown:

  • cd win/internet/www to change to the browser directory
  • bin to download as a binary file
  • hash on Prints out hash characters to show the file progress
  • get msie302e.exe Starts downloading the file. This may take up to an hour.

Configuring Internet Explorer

Start up Internet Explorer, then click on View, Options. Go to the Connection tab, and select Connect through a proxy server.

Type in proxy.netro.com.au on port 8080 for all the services (except for Socks) as shown here.

Click on OK, then select the Navigation tab and change the following details:

  • Home page: http://www.netro.com.au/home/
  • Search page: http://www.netro.com.au/search/
